Liquid Limit of backfill soil
I have faced a problem with Qatar Petroleum Engineers about the Liquid Limit % of the structural backfill material. The specification requires the material to comply not more than 35% LL but the imported soil gives more than 35 % & the requirement of Plastic Index is not more than 10.
Practically the soil gives far more than 35 % but people have to manipulate the results to comply with the requirement
During technical argument with the engineers, It has been stressed to establish the relation between the shear strength & the liquid limit
The relation states that more the LL, early commencement of the shear strength gain by soil if silt content or plasticity is not effected.
These government engineers are not ready to understand & change the specification due to the shouldering of the personal responsibility
They go only by books & not by logic. Grading is ok. Water content is ok. Practical demonstration by separating the soil contents ok
On a technical query, the response is follow the specification

Dear Suraj Singh Soil with PI Value more than 10 and LL 35 is no where recomended for filling the reason is that it contains clay particles holding down the water causing long term consolidation, some times swelling is also seen in such type of soils, in back fills drainges is also difficult, with incresed moisture the shear strength is also reduced, i have personal experience with such type of soil i donot know where you wish to fill it but before filling you have to go through all consolidation tests confined unconfied free swell index behavior to challenge the set patteren, as per indian standards it is limted LL 70% free swell index 50% in case of embankment. incase of soil long term behavior is very important. Thanks for response
BS codes specifies the LL in 3 ranges & QP adopted maximum 35%
All sources samples give more than 35 but manipulation is done by all for documentation purpose
Soil does not contain clay more than permissible limits
Sometimes samples show result non plastic
Concept to many engineers is not clear that more water required to transform to liquid state is better or less water required to transform to liquid state is better
Since soil starts gaining shear strength at LL & if water content is reduced further gradually, shear strength goes on increasing
